Pep Guardiola: City Struggled With Long Balls, Second Balls In Loss

May 29, 2021 7:22 PM

Pep Guardiola said that Manchester City struggled with long balls and second balls during their 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the Champions League Final.

"It was a tight game and we had some chances, but against the defensive structure of Chelsea it is not easy," Guardiola said after the match.

"We struggled with long balls and second balls. In that moment you need the inspiration and quality, there were three or four moments that were close but didn't arrive.

Guardiola has not won a Champions League Final since 2011.

The City manager remained proud of his side's accomplishments this season.

"It was a tough season in the pandemic, but we learn from this for the future. I have incredible respect for the players, they gave everything, but we will come back stronger. I want to congratulate them for their exceptional season."

Champions League Final To Be Played In London Or Lisbon

May 10, 2021 2:35 PM

The Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea will be played in either London or Lisbon.

While the preference is to hold the match at Wembley Stadium, current restrictions in the United Kingdom make it impossible for the Champions League final to be moved to London due to as many as 2,000 UEFA staff and sponsors, and international broadcast rights holders, needing to be at the game.

Playing the game at Wembley would ensure that up to 25,000 fans of both City and Chelsea would be able to attend the showpiece.

Benfica's Estadio da Luz hosted the 2019-20 final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain after the game was moved from Istanbul's Ataturk Stadium as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

UEFA Considering Two-Year Bans For Super League Holdouts

May 5, 2021 8:59 PM

UEFA is considering a two-year Champions League ban for the clubs that signed up to create the Super League and have yet to distance themselves from the project.

UEFA have spent the past 10 days in conversation with the 12 clubs in an effort to agree a lesser sanction and extract a formal definitive commitment not to pursue the Super League effort.

While they have reached an understanding with Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, they have yet to do so with Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter Milan. Inter was close to a deal, though none has been reached yet.

The four clubs holding out believe they are in a strong position, as the original documents filed with UEFA and FIFA stated that the Super League was asking the body "for permission" to run their competition and for "recognition" rather than breaking away from the organization.

Zinedine Zidane had ditched his 3-5-2 system from the first leg and gone with a more typical 4-3-3.
